Equipment & setup
Three rules for everything that comes along: good, repairable, modular. Karl sets the fourth himself — 2,850 kg empty, around 3,200 of 3,500 loaded. So every kilo has to earn its place. What follows are not categories but things that have proved themselves.
A few pieces that won’t give up. Knipex, Wera, Hazet, Wiha — plus an OBDLink that reads the fault codes before you go looking for a garage. Something was still missing once, and it was the smallest thing: the box held blade fuses, but the cabin’s electrics run on glass fuses. Both kinds live in the drawer now.
Rarely needed. Then needed at once. ARB, MAXTRAX, Factor 55. When the moment comes, every second and every newton counts. Add what’s bolted to the truck: full aluminium underbody protection, rock rails, recovery points and a snorkel, permanent four-wheel drive with a 100 % centre lock and a front locker.
Not more watts — more usable amps. 220 W of solar on two panels, Votronic control, a 107 Ah AGM and CTEK shore power, plus a power station and a Starlink Mini. At normal consumption the sun tops it up during the day; power is rarely the bottleneck, water is. The next step is therefore LiFePO₄, not more solar: an AGM gives you about half of its capacity, LiFePO₄ almost all of it.
04 · Camp & kitchen
Inside the cabin a stainless sink with pressurised water from two 16 l tanks, compressor cooling, a parking heater and a chemical-free dry toilet. Cooking happens outside when it can, on the fold-down table on the cabin. Felt against rattles, as little plastic as possible — whatever grates after a few months doesn’t come on the next trip.

05 · Care
ACF-50, Autosol, Ballistol. The aluminium cabin is salt-water-resistant — after winter, road salt and a dirt track you still look after it, and the truck underneath even more so.

A Sony full-frame for the road, a Fuji GFX 100 II when it really matters, and a tripod. Plenty of the pictures on this site were still taken on an iPhone — on the Lofoten and in the Baltics almost all of them. You carry the big camera gladly when the subject is right. The subject just doesn’t wait until it’s unpacked.
